Romania
Short trip to Romania – county of Maramures. I have crossed from Poland to Slovakia, then from Slovakia to Hungary and from Hungary to Romania. If I had traveled the same route before 1914 I would have crossed only one state border – the one between Russia and Austro-Hungary, and within Austro-Hungarian Empire just an administrative border between Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria and Kingdom of Hungary (today it is a border between Poland and Slovakia).
Until 1920 Maramures was county within Kingdom of Hungary. After 1920 it was split between Czechoslovakia and Romania. Then with some German support Hungarians got it back for a while, but after 1945 ‘Romanian’ part was given back to Romania, while Czechoslovakian part was occupied by Soviets and incorporated into Ukraine. This has always been a frontier area with mixed population (Romanians, Ruthenians, Gypsies, Hungarians, some Germans).
